Herd Peak Lookout should be a checkmark on the bucket list of lookouts near Mt. Shasta for the avid lookout enthusiast. The main road part of the drive is filled with majestic views of Mt. Shasta and coming from Redding Castle Crags will not disappoint displaying its splendor.
97 East out of Weed California to Miller Mountain Road is a short drive. Internet directions will show staying on Miller Mountain Road but doing so will take you around the backside directly under Herd Peak Lookout, and then top out at a locked gate. Take Forest Road 45N22 to the right a short while after entering Miller Mountain Road. Stay on 45N22 till the Y and then take 44N39Y. I think there are signs at this point to keep you on the right path.
Unlike may lookouts, the 7024-foot-high Herd Peak Lookout has a great road all the way to the top, ample turn around, and parking. A short climb up the stairs and you are at the manned lookout. The gentleman we met had been working there for 10 years of his 40 plus year career and was a great host.
The view of Mt. Shasta from Herd Peak Lookout may be the best available. The North slope of Mt. Shasta is so close you can clearly see the top through a hunting scope the lookout had mounted inside. Stunning, breathtaking, you name it. We went there on a cloudy day, so views were a waiting game, but we did get some nice photos.
