Sugarloaf Lookout is one of the lower lookouts in the Shasta Trinity National Forest but don’t let that stop you. Putting this one off because of the altitude, locked gate, or the radio towers is a mistake.

The route is simple from Lakeshore Drive out of Lakehead off I-5. Once at the end of the pavement it is up the dirt road on the left.  The road is in excellent condition with minimal ruts, rocks, and other obstructions. The road is gated about ½ mile from the Sugarloaf Lookout, but the walk is worth the effort.

Views from the top are incredible.  To the North, Castle Crags sits with Mount Shasta doing a photo bomb. Catching these two in the same picture is quite a sight. East and Southeast are High Mountain, Shasta Lake, Shasta Caverns, and the valley. West and Southwest are the Trinity Alps and other mountains.
